Greece’s shores on the Aegean Sea are were the first civilisations in Europe began. These were the Minoan and the Mycenean, the Mionans were the first to use a alphabet. But it was not until around 800 BC that Greek cities started to emerge around the shores of the Mediterranean.

It’s was Plato who described the Greeks living close to the shores as “like frogs around a pond”. The Romans conquered Greece by brutal force, but it was the Greek culture that taught the Romans so much and life along the coast continued to grow.

The country population today is about 11,018.00 and Greece’s popularity with visitors continues to grow. In the year 2004 Greece had over 14 million visitors and spent almost 11 billion euros while in the country.

Geography and Climate of Greece

Greece is one of Europe’s most mountainous countries with almost 80% of the land being mountains or hills. Mount Olympus is the highest point in Greece and stands at 2,919 meters above sea level. The central and western area of Greece contains high peaks and fantastic gorges such as the Meteora and Vikos gorge.

In the eastern parts of Greece there are large plains with two large cities Volos and Larissa. The climate in Greece falls into three categories these are the Alpine, Mediterranean and Temperate. The Alpine is found primarily in Western Greece such as Thessaly, Achaea and central Greece. The Mediterranean climate has features such as mild wet winters, and hot dry summers. And Temperate this climate is found in central and eastern Macedonia with cold, damp winters and hot dry summers.

The Greek landscape is covered by Forrest which surprises many people on arrival who presume that hot summers do not allow for trees to grow. Almost 50% of the land in Greece are covered by forest with a wide variation of plant and fauna ranging from Alpine to Mediterranean.

The Greek shoreline is awash with marine life such as seals, turtles, and a large variety of sea birds. As for the mountains and forests these provide home for Western Europe’s last brown bears, as well as home to the Lynx, wild Boer, roe deer, wild goat and fox.

Demographics of Greece

There are various reports regarding the ethnic makeup of Greece’s population, but it is widely accepted by most that somewhere between 2% and 8% are made up of none ethic Greek immigrants.

These are made up mainly from Turks, Macedonian Slavs, and various roma groups. Albanian immigrants make up between 60% and 65% of Greeks immigrant population this is mostly due to the collapse of communism in Albania.

Other nationalities that add to Greece’s ethnic mixture are Bulgarians, Romanians, Ukranines, Pakistani’s and Georgians these are the principal countries that the immigrants are drawn from however Greece has a total of 180 recorded different nationalities living within its borders.

The mixture and diversity of the immigrants in Greece is not at all surprising when you consider geograhilicy were Greece stands. With boarders on Bulgaria, Macedonia, Albania, Turkey and the former Yugoslav Republic and the willingness of these people to move around Europe it is easy to see why Greece attracts many cultures.
