Athens

Athens - the basics are that it's the capital and largest city in Greece, with a hectic 3.7 million people and a land mass of 19 km sq.

However, impressive though those statistics are, it's a city which will live long in the memory - much as it has endured throughout human history - for much more than mere numbers (despite the fact that trigonometry was invented in Ancient Greece).

For many, the first images that are conjured up when thinking about Greece are olive-oiled warriors, hefting spears and waging war in famous battles. Achilles, Alexander the Great, the siege of Troy, Homer's Odyssey - the famous names of the city's history are as real and vivid now as the still-standing magnificence of the Parthenon and Acropolis.

Both the rich history and magnificent architecture of Athens are a standing testament to what the ancient Greeks achieved - before one even begins to discuss the relative enlightenment of its children, the likes of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle who are still regarded as some of the finest minds ever to walk the earth.

However, as vital and seminal as the city's history is, it's important to remember that it offers so much more than just sightseeing, despite the fact that there are some rather spectacular sights to see.

The city is blessed with great weather all year round. This is no doubt a major factor making it a popular spot among pale Britons looking to escape to get their once-yearly tan top-up.

"Athens is an ideal year-round city destination with comfortable and favourable climate conditions for travel and sightseeing ... sunshine and outdoor living is almost always a given. No matter what time of the year," states the tourist authority.

Ok, so the weather's great. But not everyone is content to lounge around on a beach, no matter how much fun the Apollo Coast and Pireaus may be. What else is there to do?

Well, aside from the (already mentioned) sightseeing, which ranks among the best on the face of the planet, the city is packed with spectacular events and a very modern nightlife among the relics of a time long past.

In this summer alone, visitors can enjoy European Music Day, which sees over 100 events take place in the city, while for those looking for something with a bit more edge, the Rockwave Festival at Terra Vibe features some of the best live acts currently performing.

Life music isn't for everyone though and according to the tourist board, the city has a wide range of culinary sensations to please even the most punctilious of palettes.

The board states: "The Athenian food scene, in the past decade, has experienced a gourmet revolution. Rooftop bars can compete with some of the world's most renowned. Can they claim a view of the Acropolis?"

It's easy to see the authority's point.

Additionally, Athens' residents and tourists alike are known to enjoy a party, with plenty of hotspots available for those who enjoy a tipple and some late-night fun. Split into a number of different areas, each offering their own scene for party animals, Athens ensures that visitors can dance the night away every night before collapsing back home to one of the many cheap hotels.

So, to sum up, Athens is a spot which offers plenty for all visitors young and old, whether catching some rays and enjoying the nightclubs, or viewing the wonderful architecture and taking things a touch more slowly are the order of the day.
