Everything Under the Moon
Visitors to Athens in August will be able to do more moonwalking at night than Michael Jackson with insomnia as the August moon festival takes place.
Lasting through the whole month of August, the festival centres on that month's full moon, when the Acropolis becomes the centre of events along with the city's many other historic and archaeological treasures.
Under the bright moonlight these legendary attractions will be open for free, with the additional treat of having music and opera performed at the sites, all making the balmy evening an atmospheric treat that could leave some people under the moon feeling over it.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels can also enjoy a wide range of other attractions in Athens, from its beaches and nearby Aegean islands to a wide variety of culinary experiences and the impressive array of sporting venues bequeathed by the 2004 Olympics.
Not only is the city easier to travel round as a legacy of the Olympics, but the Athens Metro itself has its own museum, with Syntagma station displaying artefacts unearthed during excavation work, so those travelling there get more than just a ride for their ticket.
