Have a Smashing Time

Visitors spending Easter in Corfu should have a great time - just as long as they don't buy any pottery there before Easter Saturday.

The occasion is marked by an unusual tradition, believed to stem from a combination of biblical scripture and an adaptation of a Venetian new year tradition that involves breaking rather a lot of pottery.

When the morning service ends at 11 o'clock in the morning, jars and other earthenware items are hurled from windows in a smashing orgy of destruction and noise.

Visitors staying in cheap hotels on the island should note that in the orthodox calendar, Easter Saturday falls on April 26th.
