Have a Smashing Time

Have a smashing time Visitors spending Easter in Corfu should have a great time - just as long as they don't buy any pottery there before Easter Saturday.

The occasion is marked by an unusual tradition, believed to stem from a combination of biblical scripture and an adaptation of a Venetian new year tradition that involves breaking rather a lot of pottery.

When the morning service ends at 11 o'clock in the morning, jars and other earthenware items are hurled from windows in a smashing orgy of destruction and noise.

Visitors staying in cheap hotels on the island should note that in the orthodox calendar, Easter Saturday falls on April 26th.

Apart from the smashing of jars, visitors can also enjoy the smashing of plates and other smashing Greek traditions on the island, which also has smashing beaches, smashing warm weather and plenty of smashing swimming and boating opportunities in the azure sea.

There is also plenty of fine scenery and wine to be enjoyed on the island.
