Octopressie
With Christmas on the way, present-giving is something we shall all be doing, but the unwrapping doesn't end on December 25th in the Greek town of Gythio.
On New Year's Eve, locals and visitors alike are invited to come to the town hall with their gifts, which are then handed out by the mayor.
The tradition comes with food, cakes and partying as the New Year is seen in, with octopus, a Gythio speciality, featuring highly on the menu.
Gythio and the surrounding area has plenty more to offer tourists.
Apart from its warm location at the southern tip of Greece, this historic area has the Byzantine Castle of Mistras, the Cape Tainaro lighthouse, famed in Greek mythology as the gateway to Hades, plus the beautiful caves of Diros, home to a large number of anthropological finds.
The area has plenty of accommodation for visitors, including cheap hotels.
