Ride of the Voukolies

Crete is a pleasant enough place to visit at any time, especially in autumn when the warm Mediterranean climate makes a nice change from cold winds and wet falling leaves, but in early November there is an extra reason to go – the Tsikoudia festival.

The festival is held in the town of Voukolies in Chania county, where tsikoudia, a veritable firewater at 36 per cent alcohol, takes centre stage.

Made from the must-residue of winepresses, tsikoudia is a famous Cretan product and is served with honey and other local products during the two-day festival, which usually takes place on November 4th and 5th, this year's date still to be confirmed.

Crete is popular with tourists and has a wealth of tourist attractions, including plenty of cheap hotels.

Other attractions of the island include its beautiful coastline, the spectacular Imbrou gorge and a wealth of fortresses, churches and archeological sites, reflecting the long and rich cultural history of the island from the Byzantine to the modern day.
