Say Yes to Saying No

Say yes to saying no Athens will be reverberating to the word "no" on October 28th as the country celebrates Oxi Day.

Oxi is a curious sounding festival but has a very logical origin, dating back to 28th October 1940 when Mussolini gave Greece an ultimatum to allow his army to occupy Greece or face invasion.

Ioannis Metaxis, the Greek Prime minister, replied with a resounding "Oxi", Greek for "no", and thus Greece entered the war in a spirit of defiance rather than capitulation, repelling the subsequent Italian invasion.

The festival itself is accompanied by military parades and political speeches in a major show of national pride, which also manifests itself in folk dancing and other festivities.

As Go Greece says, "it's a proud spectacle ... so be sure to see it!"

There are plenty of cheap hotels and other accommodation in Athens, which is well equipped for tourists after hosting the last Olympic Games, and witnessing Oxi day can be combined with touring the many sites and relics of the great civilisation of ancient Greece.
