Thess is the one to watch Lovers of the more cerebral type of film may find just the thing in the historic Greek town of Thessaloniki in March, at the town's documentary film festival.

Held from the 7th to the 25th of the month, the event will, according to organisers, deal with social issues, highlight "the human contribution to cultural, social and historical developments", the recording of memory and tales of human interest.

The festival also has a secondary purpose of aiming to facilitate the marketing of such films.

While visitors to the festival should find the event of great interest, they will also find it in the city as a whole, which has a deep and rich heritage.

Second only to Athens in size, it has a long history, founded in 316 BC and named after the half-sister of Alexander the Great, the home of one of the earliest churches in the 1st century, the capital of the Byzantine empire in the middle ages and rebuilt after a major fire in 1917.

It has a large number of Roman and Byzantine ruins, not to mention plenty of accommodation which includes cheap hotels.
