Hungary Since 1945

Hungary fell under the influence of the Soviet power after the end of the Second World War, and was turned into a communist state in 1948. This had followed two years of democracy between 1946-1947.

It was the Stalinist ruler Matyas Rakosi who was put in charge and made life very hard for those living in Hungary so shortly after the hardship of the war. The country was pushed to revolution and in 1956 the country withdrew from the Warsaw Pact.

The Soviet Union meets the revolution full on, by sending in the tanks and military.

However from the 1960s to the late 1980s Hungary enjoyed the title of the “happiest barrack” while under the rule of Janos Kadar who ruled in an autocratic way.
