All's Fair in the Square
With the nights drawing in and Christmas shopping dilemmas drawing nearer it's well worth considering a visit to the Budapest Christmas Market, which runs from November 25th to December 24th.
The festival, held in Vorosmarty Square, offers an enticing combination to visitors: the chance to shop for that unusual and exotic gift, a wide variety of entertainment from folk dancing and nativity plays, along with all the usual attractions of this historic city on the banks of the Danube.
According to the city's tourism office, there will be around 150 entertainment programmes and nearly 100 stalls, with a wafting aroma of Hungarian delicacies filling the air and a number of multilingual assistants on hand to help visitors about.
Vorosmarty square is easy to reach on the Budapest underground, the second oldest in the world, which in turn offers easy access around the sights of the city, from the riverbank, Castle district and Andrassy UT, (all Unesco world heritage sites) to the thermal baths, which, it is claimed, have the only Turkish bath facilities for women in Europe.
The city is well equipped with plenty of accommodation options, including plenty of cheap hotels.
