Hungary by Half
Aspiring athletes who love a good run but don't yet feel ready for a marathon can always do half, with Budapest providing the most picturesque of settings.
The Budapest Half Marathon 2007 takes place on September 2nd, with the 13-mile course taking runners on a picturesque tour of this grand old city.
Starting in Pest, the route heads through some historic streets before crossing the famous Chain Bridge and taking in both banks of the beautiful river Danube.
According to organisers, anyone wanting to run can register online for a fee of €30 (£24) up until June 30th, after which the fee rises to €35.
Apart from the run, visitors can enjoy many other attractions in the city at a more sedantry pace.
These include Buda Castle and Saint Stephen's Basilica amid a myriad of grand old buildings, while tired runners may enjoy one of the many thermal baths.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels can also get around town using the second oldest underground rail system in the world.
