Discover Icelandic Art in Reykjavik

Discover Icelandic art in Reykjavik Travellers staying in cheap hotels in Reykjavik over the coming months will be able to take themselves on a journey of Icelandic art.

Until the end of December this year, the Reykjavik Art Museum will host an exhibition called Water Carrier, which displays watercolours by 11 artists from Iceland.

This show is one of a number of exhibitions that have been held over the last few years bringing together a group of non-conformist Icelandic artists.

The objective of these displays has been more important than the artists themselves – to celebrate the ancient art of watercolour painting.

Visitors will see works by painters using water-soluble colours on canvas, gouache paints on paper, watercolours with embroidery and other forms of expression.

Subjects depicted in the art range from nature and people to conceptual images and sights usually seen only in medical journals.

Founded in 1973, the Reykjavik Art Museum is the largest visual art institution in Iceland and is based at three venues – Hafnarhus, Kjarvalsstadir and Asmundarsafn.
