Independence on Ice
Visitors to Iceland in June can expect a major outbreak of patriotic fervour as the country celebrates its Independence Day on the 17th.
Marking the date of cessation from the Kingdom of Denmark in 1944, the day sees a wide range of parades, street theatre, entertainment and traditional dancing, all taking place on one of the longest days of the year in a country lying just south of the Arctic Circle.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels on the island can make the most of the virtually endless daylight hours by enjoying the many natural wonders of the country.
While the coastline offers fjords and whale-watching and the interior is a vast expanse of mountains, lakes and glaciers, the greatest highlight is the active geology, which is manifested in hot mud pools, geysers and geothermal springs, some of which make great places to bathe.
