Reykjavik Races into Fresh Air Marathon

Reykjavik races into fresh air marathon Reykjavik's marathon, which is famous for its fresh air and uncluttered streets, will race into the calendar on August 19th 2006.

The thousands of local residents who take part each year are joined by hundreds from Europe and the USA, with around 90 expected to attend from the UK.

Although Iceland may put the image of frosty mornings and chilly evenings into the minds of many travellers, organisers state that the expected temperature is "ideal for marathoning" at around 12 to 14 degrees centigrade.

Organisers claim that although "some of the cleanest air in the world" is no doubt a great attraction for potential runners, many may also be tempted by the city's cultural night held on the day of the marathon, which finishes with a fireworks show in the evening.

Competitors can choose from four distances, starting with a three kilometre fun run up to a marathon 42.2 kilometres.

All participants are also welcome to use the city's swimming pools free of charge – although most spectators may have this luxury whether staying in a luxury or cheap hotel.
