Run Reykjavik

Run Reykjavik Reykjavik might not be among the world's best known marathons, but runners who fancy a change of scenery this year might consider heading to Iceland's capital.

The Reykjavik Marathon takes place on August 18th this year, with competitors from all over the world set to run.

Runners pay around €50 to take part in the race, which starts and finishes in Laekjargata, central Reykjavik.

The event is geared towards serious runners, but there is a charity run that gets underway before the main event.

Anyone worried about the cold will be pleased to hear that in August, Iceland experiences milder weather with temperatures expected to reach between 12C and 14C.

As well as the kudos of completing the 26-mile course, runners will get free entrance to the city's swimming pools on the day of the race and the day after to ease their aching muscles.

The race is particularly popular with Canadians. Over 300 people made the trip last year to take part.

For the foreign participants, finding a cheap hotel in Iceland can be difficult, but there are good deals to be had for people who shop around and book early.
