Discover the Art of Two Famous Writers
People staying in cheap hotels in Dublin over the coming weeks will be able to learn more about the artistic exploits of two men who were better known for their writing.
An exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) will look at the cut-outs and cut-ups of Hans Christian Andersen and William S Burroughs, who were very different in many ways but similar in others.
Andersen lived in Denmark in the 19th century and was famous for creating fairytales such as The Ugly Duckling and The Princess and the Pea, while Burroughs was a leading member of America's Beat Generation of writers in the 1950s and 60s.
Both were intrepid travellers and larger-than-life characters, and both had a fascination with the visual arts.
The exhibition at the IMMA features 124 of Andersen and Burroughs' pieces of art, focusing on their mutual interest in cutting out pictures and stencils featuring silhouettes and shadows.
Andersen's half of the display also includes picture books containing original collages, while Burroughs' exhibition features paintings on paper and wood.
The exhibition will be open until June 29th.
