Dublin Hosts Soldiers and Chiefs

Dublin hosts soldiers and chiefs The city of Dublin will be exploring the subject of the Irish at war, at home and abroad, at a special exhibition this year.

Soldiers and Chiefs will be held at the National Museum of Ireland until the end of the year and will span significant eras ranging from 1550 to 2001.

Three main themes are pursued throughout the display - soldiers at home, soldiers abroad and soldiers in the 20th century.

A purpose-built three-storey exhibition space also houses planes and armoured vehicles lent by the Irish Defence Force and Air Corps.

The exhibition features original artefacts, letters, replicas and audio accounts that explore the full meaning and effect of war and the impact that various conflicts have had on the lives of Irish people.

Among the items on show is a sword that belonged to one of Napoleon's troops, as well as playing cards taken from a pirate ship, Christmas cards and chocolate boxes from the trenches and a child's gas mask.
