People staying in cheap hotels in Dublin who visit this display will be able to see items that have been kept in storage in the museum for many years.
Collected in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the objects have been used by scholars studying classic art and architecture.
The range of display pieces includes glass vessels, textiles, sculpture, ceramics, coins and gemstones that have been recovered at archaeological digs in Egypt, Austria, England and other countries.
Some of the heaviest themes of the exhibition are included in its introduction, which features a display of Etruscan material and a consideration of themes including death, burial, religion and the afterlife in the Roman world.
The display concludes with the introduction of Christianity and the long-lasting impact that the religion had.
