On Top of Ireland
Anyone fancying a go at climbing the highest mountains in Ireland may find the Kenmare Walking Festival just the way to go about it.
Held in the wild uplands of County Kerry, the event runs from May 26th to June 3rd 2007, covering all kinds of walks of varying degrees of difficulty, from the simple to the highest mountains, from the valleys around Kenmare to the Beara Peninsula and of course the challenge of Macgillycuddy's reeks, topped by Carrauntoohil, at 3,410 ft the highest mountain in Ireland and flanked by other 3,000-footers such as Cnoc na Peiste, Beenkeragh and Caher.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels in Kenmare need to be well equipped for walking, with good boots and appropriate clothing.
The reward for hiking to the top of the mountains, apart from the proud boast, is a spectacular panoramic view across the vast expanse of the Atlantic on a clear day.
