Raise a Glass to the Greats
Visitors to Dublin will often take the chance to sample a pint - or several - of the black stuff, but as there is more to Dublin than Guinness, one good way to explore the city's heritage is to head on a winter literary pub crawl.
Setting off on any Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday at 19.30 GMT, the tour takes in a series of pubs frequented by some of the most famous writers in Irish history.
While the level of alcohol consumption is optional, the depth of literary history certainly isn't, with the trip taking in the haunts of greats such as James Joyce, Oscar Wilde, WB Yeats and George Bernard Shaw, all accompanied by minstrels and actors who provide extra information and flavour.
Tickets are €12 (£8).
After experiencing this rich aspect of Dublin's heritage, visitors staying in cheap hotels might want to take in one of the many other aspects of the city's culture and history.
Famous buildings include Trinity University, where the Book of Kells is kept, as well as Dublin Castle, formerly home of British rule.
Speedy transport connections also allow for good access to the countryside beyond, with the Wicklow Mountains a special attraction.
