Awesome Foursome

Awesome Foursome Pisa has always been an historic city, but that old heritage has some interesting ways of springing back into life, such as the Festa di San Ranieri.

San Ranieri is the patron saint of the city and his day (June 17th) is commemorated by a race between four boats, each representing one of the four sectors into which Pisa is divided.

Held on the River Arno, the race against the current is not just a dash to be first to the winning post: a climber then has to get out of the boat and scale a mast with a banner attached to claim victory.

Visitors joining the crowds to see this four-sided aquatic derby will get a taste of the heritage of Pisa as a maritime republic in medieval times, just one of the many historic features of this ancient city.

Those staying in cheap hotels will have many old buildings to enjoy, but none more so than the famous leaning tower, now bolstered against leaning any more and falling by foundation support work in recent years.
