Book a Cheap Hotel in Venice for Boat Race

Book a cheap hotel in Venice for boat race People who book a cheap hotel in Venice in May might be interested in cheering on the rowers at the annual Vogalonga, the city's biggest boat race.

More than 5,000 rowers in 1,000 boats wait for the cannon shot in St Mark's basin to start the race on May 13th, ahead of their 30-kilometre journey to the local island of Burano and back.

Established in 1975 by rivalling rowers, the competition focuses heavily on a more spiritual aspect than the UK version.

The event takes place around Ascension Day and organisers call it an "act of love for Venice and its waters", with the purpose to "disseminate knowledge, awareness and respect for the essence and culture of our city".

Locals and tourists flock to the stands to watch the race go ahead and many international rowers come to the city to compete against the Venetians.

Visitors to the city can enjoy the camaraderie that surrounds the race before spending the day in the square in the local cafes and the prominent cathedral from which the basin takes its name.
