Fruity End to Christmas
The Italian town of Bordonaro is home to a special tree every January to mark the Epiphany.
Epiphany celebrates the arrival at the stable in Bethlehem of the Three Kings and marks the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas.
In Bordonaro, located in the state of Sicily a short drive from Messina, the locals decorate a tree in the town's main public square with bread and fruit to mark Epiphany and top it with a 2m high cross.
Called a Pagghiaru, the goodies on the tree can be eaten after the evening mass, with crowds flocking into the square to claim the best Christmas tree decorations.
The free food festival is followed by a performance of a traditional Sicilian theatre piece, which translates as Man and Ferocious Nature.
A visit can be combined with a wider tour of Sicily, which has many accommodation options, including cheap hotels.
