Gay Tennis Tournament in Milan
The hugely successful Italian Gay Open (IGO) tennis tournament is a good excuse if you need one for a city break to stylish Milan from 7-10 September.
The tournament provides a top showcase for gay and lesbian talent from Europe, organised by ATOMO, the Association of Homosexual Tennis Players.
ATOMO members have been cutting a dash on the European and international sporting agenda since 1999. The organisation is part of the Gay and Lesbian Tennis Alliance and the Italian Tennis Federation (FIT).
About 150 players from beginner to advanced level will play in five divisions throughout the sporting event, which has a lively social side as well. Overseas competitors can stay with local hosts to take part.
Though it has a long way to go to match the scene in other parts of the world, Milan is Italy's gay capital and has the country's only designated 'gay street', Via Sammartini.
