Grab a Pisa the Action
Visitors to Pisa in June will get the chance to see the locals engaging in a bit of a turf war, but don't worry - it's all part of a time-honoured tradition.
The Il Gioco del Ponte (game of the bridge) takes place on the bridge over the River Arno, which separates the city in to its northern and southern parts.
Formerly involving lots of violence, the re-enacted battle is the culmination of a major procession which includes soldiers in medieval uniform, who now have a push-of-war in which a wooden chariot must be pushed onto the opposing bank.
While visitors staying in cheap hotels can have a great day enjoying this local derby, the historic attractions of Pisa do not start or end at the bridge.
The famous leaning tower, now safe after stabilising work, is the most famous of many historic buildings which include the neighbouring cathedral, while the city is very close to the sea and Tuscany's famous vineyards.
