Holy Relic on Display in Milan
Every year, Catholics flock to Milan to view what is purportedly one of the religion's most holy relics.
The item, a nail which was used to pin Jesus to the cross, is celebrated on September 13th 2006, although the relic now resembles the bit of a horsebridle, after Roman Emperor Constantine reputedly had the metal melted down.
Every year the archbishop of Milan marks the occasion by ascending toward the heavens on a cloud, or rather a mechanical basket painted with clouds, revealing the treasure to the amassed crowds.
Although Milan has world-class food, shopping and entertainment, cheap hotels, a vibrant nightlife and two of the best football teams in Europe, travellers, whether religious or not, would be advised to visit the occasion, for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Although now housed in the Duomo di Milano, the history of the nail is less clear, with theorists placing it arriving in the hands of Saint Ambrosius, or the Crusaders.
