It Makes Sensa

It makes sensa Visitors to Venice a will never be short of historical sights and activities, but on May 20th one of its most time-honoured traditions takes place.

Marking the festival of the Sensa (ascension day), a duty once performed by the Doge (chief magistrate) of the city state and carried out now by the city authorities sees a large and decorous flotilla head in procession from St Nicholas's square to the Adriatic, where a ring is cast into the water to mark the marriage between the city and the sea.

Visitors to the city staying in cheap hotels can marvel at this enduring tradition, as well as enjoying the many marvels of this timelessly classical place.

The city still retains its delightful medieval architecture, while the romance and style of punting down one of the numerous canals is as great as ever.

St Mark's Square and the city walls are also particular highlights of any trip.
