Lantern Jaw-dropping

Lantern jaw-dropping Visitors to Florence in early September will be able to enjoy as much from the renaissance as at any other time, but there will certainly be a bit more enlightenment.

The reason for this is the Rificolona, a light spectacular held on the evening of September 7th every year, when children parade through the city carrying lanterns.

Various theories try to account for the origin of the festival, including the marking of an important market in early September, while See Tuscany states that an alternative explanation is that it commemorates the march of Florentine troops into Siena in 1555.

Whatever the origins, there should be no doubt that visitors staying in cheap hotels in Florence will see a luminous spectacle, with plenty of stalls, food and a short address by the Cardinal as he leads the procession, all of which is followed by a night of merrymaking.

All this comes on top of the usual wonders of Florence, with its many artistic treasures and beautiful architecture, so much of which is the work of legendary figures such as Michaelangelo and Raphael.

Famous structures in the city, whose centre is a United Nations world heritage site, include the Roman aqueduct, the Duomo and the Ponte Vecchio.
