San Siro Stadium Milan
The San Siro stadium is the home of two of Italy’s greatest football teams, AC and Inter Milan. The official title for the stadium is Stadio Giuseppe Meazza but the whole football world simply calls it the San Siro. Giuseppe Meazza was a player for both of the Milan teams between 1930s and 1940s. Although Giuseppe Meazza played for both the Milan teams, his most successful spell was with the Inter team whose fans regard him as their own. As a result of this most Inter fans favour the name San Siro for the stadium.
The stadium is loved today by both home and away fans for the atmosphere it generates. With its steep stands and a closeness to the pitch, a ferocious noise can be generated from within the stadium. Footballers today love or fear playing at this intimidating arena.
The stadium construction first started in 1925 in the district of San Siro, from which the stadiums name derived. It was the idea of AC president Piero Pirelli to build a stadium in the same vicinity of the race track. A year later in 1926 AC played arch rivals Inter in the inauguration game. The game was watched by a crowd of 35,000 who saw Inter win the match 6-3. For the stadiums first twenty years the stadium was solely the home of AC Milan. It was two years after the war, in 1947, that Inter moved into the stadium and have shared it ever since.
The San Siro has a 5 star UEFA rating allowing International games and hosting Champion League finals. In 1990, Italy hosted the World Cup, with the San Siro feature key matches. A total of 60 million dollars was spent on upgrading this fine old stadium.
Part of the upgrade involved an extra tier being added and the removal of the last standing area. The roof needed an extra eleven columns for support of which four have red protruding girders. The San Siro stadium is visited today by many of Milan’s tourists who may or may not be football fans.
The stadium in the summer is also home to outdoor concerts and has over the years featured acts such as Bob Dylan, U2, Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Carlos Santana, David Bowie and many more.
