Oh Deer Me

Oh deer me For those who enjoy something a bit different, they will find it with antlers on in southern Italy at the Carnival in Castelnuovo del Volturno in the state of Molise.

Held every March, the carnival ends with a bizarre half-man, half-deer charging around the marketplace, causing mayhem.

The deer is then confronted by a holy man, who struggles with the deer, is then overwhelmed, but sees the deer felled by the hunter.

Having felled the deer, the hunter whispers in its ear and the beast is revived, restored and redeemed.

The local tradition, which occurs every year, is of unknown but probably pre-Christian origin.

Visitors staying in cheap hotels in the area have plenty more to see and do apart from the strange ritual.

The Molise region is mainly composed of small towns and villages, with plenty of scenery, although it borders the province of Lazio.

It also has one of the oldest bell making factories in the world, at Agnone.
