Pisa

Pisa is a city in central Italy on the bank of the mouth of the Arno River.  It is part of Tuscany which is a region running on Italy’s west coast.  Although famous for the Leaning Tower of Pisa there is much more to see. Pisa is a lively and exciting city with something for everyone.

Places to visit in Pisa

The most famous site in Pisa, and perhaps even Italy is the leaning tower of Pisa.  However, it is one of many architecturally and artistically important structures, in the cities Campo dei Miracoli the site of the cathedral and monumental cemetary.  The tower is a free standing bell tower and although intended to stand vertically it began leaning soon after the construction in 1173 due to its poorly laid foundation.  A project to keep the tower from leaning further was completed in 2001 and it is now open to those wishing to climb it. This is a site not to be missed by any visitor to Pisa.

The Duomo di Pisa is a magnificent Cathedral in fine Romanesque style worthwhile visiting for the artwork by Giambolna and Dela Robbia.  There are many churches of cultural and historic importance throughout Pisa, of which include the church of San Nicola, Santa Maria della Spina and San Paolo a Ripa d’Arno.  There are many museums to visit in Pisa.  Museo dell’Opera del Duomo exhibits original sculpture of Nicola Pisano and Giovanni Pisano among others.  The Museo Nazionale di S Matteo is similar boasting sculptures and paintings from the 12th to 15th century including masterworks of Giovanni, Andrea Pisano, Simone Martini and Masaccio.  The Museo delle Sinopie is also worth a visit for views of the artwork from the monumental cemetery.  The Baptistery is the largest of its kind in Italy.  The first three tiers are Romanesque whilst the pinnacle layer supporting the dome is Gothic.  The most interesting feature is the lack of decoration inside, group tours also get to experience a demonstration of the incredible accoustics.

Pisa is well known for its craft in leather goods, shoes, terracotta and wooden furniture.  The Piazza delle Vettovaglie is in the heart of the city, has always been the location of a daily market.  As well as colourful stalls in the square, the surrounding small alley streets are picturesque and also offer opportunities for buying Pisan specialities.  Every second weekend of the month, the streets around Piazza dei Cavalieri become a open antique market, if fortunate to visit Pisa when this is on, it is one of the most interesting in Italy because of Pisa being home to so many furniture manufacturers, shops and restorers.  The Borgo Stretto and Cotso Italia are also worth visiting for shopping opportunities.
