Areas of Interest in Pisa

The most famous site in Pisa, and perhaps even Italy is the leaning tower of Pisa.  The tower is a free standing bell tower and although intended to stand vertically it began leaning soon after the construction in 1173 due to its poorly laid foundation.  A project to keep the tower from leaning further was completed in 2001 and it is now open to those wishing to climb it. This is a site not to be missed by any visitor to Pisa.

The Duomo di Pisa is a magnificent Cathedral in fine Romanesque style worthwhile visiting for the artwork by Giambolna and Dela Robbia.  There are many churches of cultural and historic importance throughout Pisa, of which include the church of San Nicola, Santa Maria della Spina and San Paolo a Ripa d’Arno.  There are many museums to visit in Pisa.  Museo dell’Opera del Duomo exhibits original sculpture of Nicola Pisano and Giovanni Pisano among others. 

Borgo Stretto is a shopping arcade with a great range from designer labels in clothing, shoes and accessories.  Not to be missed during sales seasons.

Piazza delle Vettovaglie is a market area for fruit and vegetables.  The colourful stalls add to the atmosphere in this area popular with locals.  The bars and restaurants around this area of some of the best and most inexpensive in the city.

Eating Out in Pisa

Non Solo Pizzeria is affordable and excellent.  Many would argue this restaurant serves the best pizza in town.  Recommended ones are the porcini mushrooms or mozzarella di bufala.

The Ristorante Lo Schiaccianoci has an extensive menu with something to please every palate.  Typical dishes include seafood spaghetti, taglionlini in porcini mushroom sauce and grilled meats.

Ristorante Emilio can be found near the Field of Miracles on Via Cammeo.  This elegant restaurant offers excellent cuisine with typical dishes using porcini mushrooms and wild boar.

Night Life in Pisa

Caffetteria delle Vettovaglie is a lovely café in the old market place.  This relaxing spot offers cocktails and wine with live jazz most evenings.  Dr Jazz on Vespucci is another night spot to enjoy live music on Via Vespucci.

For late night dancing and disco, visit Insomniac which attracts visitors from all over with its electronic and progressive music.

From the Airport to Pisa

Buses run from the Airport to the centre every twenty minutes.  They stop at Pisa Central, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, Riverside and Santa Chiara Hospital.  Taxi’s also run and are reasonably priced.
