Procession of Celebration in Giarratana

Procession of celebration in Giarratana Holidaymakers planning a trip to Sicily this month could sample the festival atmosphere as Giarratana pays homage to San Antonio.

Located in the region of Ragusa, the town holds the annual festival on January 17th 2007, when the narrow streets are taken over by a procession carrying the statue of San Antonio to the centre, according to What's On When.

Tourists staying in nearby cheap hotels may wish to make a visit to the town in order to witness the yearly spectacle, which can also involve the blessing of pigs as the saint is celebrated by locals as the animals' protector.

According to Sicily Web, people came to settle in Giarratana after an earthquake struck in the 17th century and the town boasts a number of religious buildings.

"The Chiesa di San Antonio Abate, rebuilt in 1748, with semi-columns and pilaster strips, contains impressive stuccoes and statues, like the Madonna della Neve, the patron saint of the town."

Summer visitors taking advantage of the area's cheap hotels could also get the chance to see an annual festival in August where people come together to celebrate one of Giarratana's most well known agricultural products - the onion.
