For those who loved Punch and Judy as youngsters, Tuscany may just be the place to go, as the Viareggio Carnival sees puppets galore.
Taking place in the town in February (date to be confirmed), the festival sees a parade of spectacular puppets, some very large, many very satirical, with politicians and other public figures lampooned in a way Spitting Image would be pushed to match.
Viareggio's parades are accompanied by a range of other fun events, partying and displays.
Outside the puppet world, Tuscany has many attractions for visitors staying in cheap hotels in the area.
The region is famous for its art, wines, rolling hills and beautiful coastline, making it one of Italy's prime holiday destinations.
Particular attractions include the delightful city of Florence, with the world famous Uffizi art gallery and renaissance architecture, Pisa with its leaning tower and the Chianti producing vineyards.
