Real Madonna Comes to Naples

Every July the religious passion of Naples' inhabitants reaches fever pitch, with the Madonna del Carmine festival.

Religious pilgrims will also flock to the city to celebrate the mother of Jesus from other countries across the world.

One of the most celebrated figures in the city, the Madonna del Carmine commands one of the most spectacular celebrations.

Starting with the saint's day, the event takes place on July 15th and 16th every year, featuring illusions and mass.

The Incendio del Campanile – literally the burning of the church tower – will start the event, where onlookers see the city's tower bursting into flames.

However, the show is an illusion, with huge numbers of fireworks fired aloft to give the impression that the monolith is ablaze.

On the day of the Madonna, a Holy Mass takes place every hour from seven in the morning to seven at night, which officials believe will ensure that devout and travellers have a chance to take part in the celebrations.
