Roman She-wolf 'younger Than Once Thought'
History enthusiasts may have to book their cheap hotels in Rome and draw their own conclusions on the origins of the famous Capitoline Wolf, after it was recently alleged that the famous statue may not be as ancient as once thought.
The statue shows a female wolf suckling Romulus and Remus, the fabled founders of the great city of Rome.
It is seen as a symbol of the mythical origins and power of Rome and, until recently, was universally thought to date back to around 500 years BC.
However, Italian newspaper La Repubblica has published the results of carbon-dating tests carried out at the University of Salerno, which concluded that the statue was created in the 13th century.
The findings will add further fuel to the debate over the origins of the Capitoline Wolf, which has raged since the 18th century.
People staying in cheap hotels in Rome can see the statue for themselves at Rome's Capitoline museums, a group of art and archaeological establishments in Piazza del Campidoglio.
The wolf is an iconic symbol of the Italian capital it appears on the badge of Roma football club and was used as the emblem for the 1960 Rome Olympics.
