Stadio Olimpico

Stadio OlimpicoStadio Olimpico is Rome’s major stadium. It is home to the Italian national football team as well as the two local Rome teams A.S. Roma and S.S. Lazio.

The stadium originally opened in 1937 but has since been through many renovations and transformations. Since the last renovation in 2008 the stadium’s capacity is 72,700.

Stadio Olimpico has hosted many major events of the years. It was the main venue of the 1960 Summer Olympic Games and also served as the host of the 1987 World Athletics Championships.

It famously hosted the 1990 FIFA World Cup Finals and in preparation for the games the stadium was greatly transformed. The major change was the addition of a roof to the building, most of the stands were also rebuilt however the original idea of an elliptical shaped bowl remained

It will also be hosting the 2009 UEFA Champions League Final. The stadium last hosted the Champions League final in 1996 when the final between Juventus F.C. and AFC Ajax, Juventus won the trophy following a penalty shootout.

The stadium is located on Foro Italico, close to the Stadio dei Marmi, also known as the ”marble standium”. It was built in 1932 by the designer Enrico Del Debbio. It was topped by white marble statues, each one coming from different Itailian cities.
