Silver Screen on the Water
Argueably the oldest film festival in the world will enjoy its 75th anniversary this year.
Taking place across local cinemas between August 29 and September 8th, the Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica, better known internationally as the Venice Film Festival, first took place in 1932.
It covers four themes: in competition, out of competition, feature-length documentary and short films; and has maintained a reputation for cinema with an intellugent, creative quality and has helped to foster great names such as Rossellini, De Sica and Fellini.
Its Golden Lion prize, introduced in 1952, is a European, non-Hollywood rival to the Oscar.
Despite the festival's reputation for the non-classic realist text films favoured by Hollywood, it had become a chic venue to be seen at for celebrities.
The line-up of the Festival will be officially announced in Rome on July 26th although the closing film has been announced as Alexi Tan's Blood Brothers and the Golden Lion is to be awarded to Bernardo Bertolucci.
The Golden Lion for lifetime achievement will go to Tim Burton.
