"Spectacular Events" on Offer in Italy This Year

People staying in cheap hotels in Venice, Rome and many other Italian destinations will be treated to a line-up of "spectacular events" this year, according to the country's national tourist board.

At the top of a list of Italy's top events for 2009 is the Venice Carnival, which will get underway on February 13th and come to an end on February 24th.

The carnival will have a retrospective theme, providing the opportunity to experience the Venice of old at glamorous parties, masquerade balls and street events, many of which will be free of charge.

Another big occasion will be held in Venice on July 19th – the Festa del Redentore – which unites the city in a day of thanksgiving for its survival of the plague in the 16th century.

Rome is likely to be the Italian destination of choice for rugby fans over the coming months when the national side play their Six Nations matches at the Stadio Olimpico on February 15th, March 14th and March 21st.

People with an interest in more unusual sports may want to head to Florence in June for the Calcio Storico, a historic event that sees four teams of local young men taking part in a tournament combining football and fighting.
