Supper at Emmaus Returns to Italy
Titian's famous painting, Supper at Emmaus, has returned to Italy for the first time in almost four centuries but for a limited time only.
The painting, which is usually on display at the Louvre, is on loan to Milan's Ambrosiana Library as part of a three-painting celebration of the mystery surrounding Christ's resurrection.
Titian's masterpiece depicts a moment which is recounted in the Gospel of Luke in which Jesus is having supper at an inn in Emmaus near Jerusalem, reports ANSA.
The Ambrosiana has infused the display room with the scent of freshly baked bread in order to make visitors think about the moment when Jesus broke the bread at the supper.
The work was completed in 1530 following a commission from the Mantuan ambassador to the Venetian republic, Nicola Maffei.
It later became part of the Gonzago Collection before being purchased by Charles I and then Louis XIV in 1662. It eventually ended up in the Louvre and has remained there ever since.
The painting can be viewed at the Ambrosiana until November 30th, after which it returns to its position in the Louvre.
