Take Flight in Florence

Take flight in Florence There are plenty of cheap hotels in Florence for people who would like a comfortable stay, but those who like to challenge themselves should head for the Italian city in late November to compete in the Firenze Marathon.

The event, which traditionally takes place on the last Sunday of every November, has grown in stature over recent years to the point where, in 2006, it attracted over 7,700 runners from 58 countries.

It is surely among the most picturesque of all the world's marathons, with the route taking runners along sweeping Florentine streets and past panoramic views of the city.

Runners set off from the Piazzale Michelangelo, cross the Ponte alla Vittoria and pass through the Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza del Duomo before reaching the finish line at Piazza Santa Croce.

A special family event, called the Ginky Mini Run, is also organised for younger people who wish to take part or families who would like to run together.

Florence, the capital of the Italian region of Tuscany, is one of the country's most beautiful and historic cities and home to such landmarks as the Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral – the Duomo – and the Fountain of Neptune sculpture in Piazza della Signoria.
