The Day of the Truffle

When it comes to truffles, it is widely argued that the white truffles of Alba in the Piemonte region of Italy are the best in the world – the Fiero del Tartufo festival aims to give visitors the chance to judge for themselves.

The festival is held from September 30th to November 5th, with the delicacies taking centre stage in a series of auctions where the culinary elite pay fortunes for them.

Restuarants around the towns serve up truffle-laden dishes, while the wines and snails of the region add more reasons for the culinary tourist's mouth to water.

The area has plenty of accommodation including cheap hotels.

North-eastern Italy offers plenty of other attractions apart from the festival, with a wealth of alpine scenery and winter sports for those who wish to combine truffling with tobogganing.

Turin, which hosted the last Winter Olympics, is full of history and culture, with many Unesco-recognised world heritage buildings, a number of museums and the revered Turin Shroud.
