The Main Redent
Originally a feast day dating from 1576 to celebrate deliverance from the plague, Festa del Redentore is one of the top events on the Venetian calendar, held every year on the third Saturday and Sunday of July (21st and 22nd in 2007).
The festival centres around the procession of decorated boats on the Sunday, with the procession culminating in a service of mass on the island of Guidecca, following which regattas and rowing races are held.
At the start of this typically aquatic event, the Saturday sees the construction of a boat bridge as decorated vessels are linked together to provide a crossing of the lagoon from Zattere to the island.
On Saturday evening the skies above Venice are lit up with a spectacular fireworks display.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels in Venice will be able to enjoy all this along with the traditional attractions of St Mark's Square, the historic city walls and the chance to punt along the canals on a gondola.
