Venice Prepares for Redentore Festival

Venice prepares for Redentore festival Travellers visiting Venice next month will be able to join in with celebrations of the Redentore festival, one of the most popular events on the city's calendar.

Celebrated every year on the third Sunday of July, the festival dates back to 1576 and is named after the church of Redentore, which was designed by Andrea Palladio and built on the island of Guidecca.

Venice was suffering from a terrible plague in the latter decades of the 16th century and residents of the city pledged to visit the Redentore church on the third Sunday of every July if the epidemic ended.

People staying in cheap hotels in Venice can celebrate Redentore this year by sitting down for a meal on the Saturday evening before the festival and watching a fireworks display that lights up the night sky for an hour.

There will also be plenty to interest culture vultures visiting Venice over the coming months following the launch of the Biennale International Art Exhibition on June 7th.

The show opened with a record 4,776 tickets sold. It will run at the Giardini and Arsenale exhibition venues until November 22nd.
