Venice Set to Become 'green Port' Destination
Environmentally-conscious people planning a trip to Venice might like to consider getting there by cruise, as the city is set to become one of two "green ports" in Italy.
Along with the city of La Spezia, the technology, which is already used in certain ports around the world, will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 30 per cent and nitrogen oxides and particulates by more than 95 per cent. It will also totally eliminate noise pollution.
Eco-cruise destinations are looking to become more popular for 2010, according to travel experts, having slowed down during the recession.
However, they tend to travel to expensive destinations such as Antarctica, said Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor-in-chief of Cruise Critic.
For short-break travellers, sailing to Venice is a way to reduce their carbon footprint. Visitors can book a cheap hotel in the city and enjoy further sailing trips to the local islands, such as Murano, which is famous for its glass-making.
