Venice Visitors 'should Explore the Whole City'
People staying in cheap hotels in Venice will benefit from a more relaxing and authentic experience of the destination if they take the time to venture out of the city centre, according to a spokeswoman for the Italian State Tourist Board.
Alessandra Smith said that there can often be problems with congestion in areas such as St Mark's Square, particularly along the canals.
Her comments follow a Daily Telegraph report on a proposal from Enrico Mingardi, head of public transport in Venice, that tourists should pre-book their visits to the city to reduce overcrowding.
Ms Smith advised people who are hoping to avoid the crowds to venture away from areas such as St Mark's Square to experience all of Venice.
"Venice is not just St Mark's Square, there are areas off the beaten track [where] you can find less people," she said.
"Areas like what used to be the old Jewish ghetto and quarters, or the island opposite St Mark's Square are very pleasant. You can explore the old churches and the old docklands, all those areas off the square are much quieter."
The best times to visit Venice, according to Ms Smith, are spring and early autumn.
