Visit Venice for Some High-speed Action

Visit Venice for some high-speed action The peaceful atmosphere of Venice will be disrupted by the sound of roaring speedboat engines in May when the Raid Pavia-Venezia event comes to the city.

This 384km boat race will take place on May 31st this year and will be completely free to watch.

Vessels ranging from antique crafts to high-powered speedboats take part in the annual race, which is held along the waterways from Pavia, just south of Milan, to Venice on Italy's north-east coast.

The race is sometimes known as the 'Dakar on the river' and in the past has attracted some high-profile names from the world of speedboat racing.

At the 2005 competition, a record was set by the Italian racer Dino Zantelli, who managed to reach a speed of just over 203km per hour in his Clerici speedboat.

There are plenty of activities on offer for people staying in cheap hotels in Venice who are planning a more relaxing break, including gondola rides along the city's canals or long lunches in one of its many picturesque squares.
