Vogalonga in Venice

Vogalonga in Venice Holidaymakers staying in cheap hotels in Venice in May could get the chance to experience one of the city's most famous events – Vogalonga.

Vogalonga is a boat race that was first organised in 1974 by a group of rowing enthusiasts and has since grown into a hugely popular occasion.

This year the contest will take place on May 11th and is set to attract as many visitors as usual to St Mark's Basin, the point where the race starts.

More than 50 rowing clubs take part in the event, which is a gruelling challenge over 18 miles, stretching across the lagoon to the island of Burano before returning to its point of origin.

Along the way the course winds through Cannaregio and the Grand Canal.

Eagle-eyed visitors may be able to catch a glimpse of a Venetian participant in the event who, for the past two years, has swum the entire length of the course.
