A Plea for Peace
The city of Hiroshima is famous for one particular history-changing event, one which is marked on its anniversary by a major commemorative ceremony.
August 6th 1945 saw the first use of the atom bomb in war, after which Hiroshima has unsurprisingly become a major centre of the anti-nuclear peace movement.
On this day, thousands gather by the memorial to the 80,000 victims, near to which stands the A-bomb dome, one of the structures that survived largely intact despite being almost directly below the detonation, to pay tribute to the dead.
The ceremony includes a poignant minute at 8.15, the time the bomb exploded, when a bell is rung, sirens sound and people stand in silent tribute.
Prayers for peace and the reading of the Peace Declaration by the mayor are also features of the ceremony.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels can attend the event for free, as well as exploring a city which has literally risen from the ashes since 1945.
