Find Your Kyoto Accord
Anyone who fancies seeing Japanese culture at its most colourful and traditional can do so in May in the city of Kyoto.
Held on the third Sunday of May, the Mifune Matsuri is a re-enactment of a Heian period boating party, floating down the Oi River in the beautiful Arishiyama district, with imperial boats decorated in exotic fashion and filled with people in period costume being joined by a following flotilla of craft.
Visitors staying in cheap hotels in the city can hire boats to follow the flotilla or watch from the bank or bridges along the route.
Apart from the festival, Kyoto offers a wide range of attractions, from the historic Imperial Palace to the large number of Shinto and Buddhist temples, while those who fancy trying out everything on the local menu will be well catered for.
The city even boasts the World Brick Museum.
